The first days in a new place are stressful for an animal. Simple preparation helps it feel at home faster.
1. Remove hazards
Wires, household chemicals, medicines, small objects, toxic plants — anything that can be swallowed or chewed — put out of reach.
2. Set up a "spot of their own"
A bed or corner where the animal can hide and rest alone. This is its safe base.
3. Get the basics ready
Food and water bowls, food, a leash/carrier, toys; for cats — a litter tray and scratching post.
4. Agree within the family
Who feeds, who walks, what the rules are (sofa/bed). Consistent rules from day one mean less confusion for the animal.
5. Allow time to adapt
Don't invite lots of guests at once, don't push. The first days need quiet, routine and patience.
