Warmth and shelter
No animal should winter outdoors without an insulated shelter. For house pets, provide a warm, draught-free place to sleep.
Paw care
Road de-icers and salt irritate paw pads. After a walk, wipe the paws with a damp cloth; use protective wax or boots if needed.
Feeding
Active dogs that spend a lot of time outdoors need slightly more calories in winter. Always keep water from freezing.
Shorter walks in the cold
In hard frost, walk more often but for shorter periods. Small and short-haired dogs can get cold — consider warm clothing.
Beware of antifreeze
Antifreeze tastes sweet and is deadly poisonous. Make sure your animal doesn't lick puddles in garages and car parks.
