Does your pet tremble and hide from loud sounds? Practical tips to ease its fear without making things worse.

How to help your dog or cat cope with fireworks, storms and loud noises

Many animals are terrified of fireworks, thunder and explosions. Here's how to help your companion through the stress.

Create a "safe den"

A cosy, enclosed spot (a carrier, corner, bathroom) with bedding where the animal can hide. Don't shut it in by force — it should come and go freely.

Muffle the sound

Close windows and curtains, play calm music or white noise to soften sharp sounds.

Be present, but calm

Your panic passes to the animal. Act normally and gently, without over-"reassuring" — your calm soothes best.

Don't punish fear

The animal isn't "misbehaving" — it's genuinely scared. Punishment only deepens the anxiety.

Prepare in advance

During storm or holiday season, walk your dog before dark and check the collar and tag are on — a frightened animal may bolt.

If the fear is very strong, ask your vet about safe calming aids.
